Retirement Income Planning in Torrance

We help you turn savings, Social Security and any life insurance cash value into a monthly income you can count on. We line up the options side by side, fees and all, so you can see what each one costs over twenty or thirty years, not just today.

What retirement income planning covers

Saving for retirement is one job. Turning those savings into a paycheck that lasts is another. Retirement income planning is that second job. It means deciding how much you can draw each month, where it comes from, and what protects it if markets drop or you live longer than you expected.

As an insurance agency, our tools are annuities and permanent life insurance. A fixed or fixed indexed annuity can create income you cannot outlive. Cash value in a whole life or universal life policy can fill gaps. We show how these fit next to Social Security and the 401(k) or IRA you already have.

Our rule is simple. A product that looks cheap up front but carries a long surrender period or rising fees is not cheap. We put the lifetime numbers on paper so the choice still makes sense at 85.

What the planning includes

  1. 01

    An income gap worksheet

We list what you expect to spend each month and what Social Security and any pension will cover. The difference is the gap your savings has to fill. Everything else starts from that number.

  2. 02

Annuity comparisons with the fine print

For each annuity we look at, we show the surrender period, rider fees, payout rate and what happens to the money if you pass away early. Two contracts with the same headline rate can pay very differently over 20 years.

  3. 03

A review of the policies you own

If you have whole life or universal life coverage, we look at the cash value, loan terms and how withdrawals would change what your beneficiary receives. Sometimes the policy you already own is your best income source.

  4. 04

    Social Security timing

We walk through how claiming at 62, at full retirement age or at 70 changes your monthly check. That choice shifts how hard your savings has to work. We don't file for you, but we make the tradeoffs clear.

  5. 05

    Inflation and longevity checks

Prices in Southern California rarely go down. We test each plan against rising costs and a long life, because income that feels fine at 66 can feel thin at 82.

Signs it is time to plan your income

  • You are within ten years of retiring

This is when choices start to lock in. The earlier you look, the more options stay open.

  • You don't know your monthly number

If you can say what you have saved but not what it will pay you each month, the plan isn't finished.

  • A market drop would change your timeline

A big loss right before or right after you retire hurts more than the same loss at 40. Some guaranteed income can take that pressure off.

  • You hold an old contract you don't understand

Many people carry an annuity or policy bought years ago with features they have forgotten. It is worth knowing what it does now and what it would cost to change it.

  • Your spouse would lose income if you passed first

When one pension or Social Security check stops, the survivor's budget can shrink fast. Good planning covers both of you.

From the first call to a finished plan

  1. 1

    Start with the basics

You tell us your age, roughly what you have saved, what you spend each month and what keeps you up at night about retirement. Nothing to sign or fill out at this point.

  2. 2

    Gathering your statements

We ask for recent statements from retirement accounts, annuities and life insurance policies, plus your Social Security estimate. We can go over them together by phone or meet at a time and place that suits you.

  3. 3

    Options side by side

We lay out two or three approaches with the monthly income, fees, surrender terms and inflation picture for each. You see what you give up and what you get, in plain numbers.

  4. 4

    Your decision, then the paperwork

If you move forward, we handle the applications and explain each form before you sign. If keeping what you have is the better call, we tell you that.

  5. 5

    Check-ins as life changes

Health, spending and tax rules change. We revisit the plan whenever you call, and yearly if you like, especially once required minimum distributions begin.

What affects the cost of your plan

The first conversation and the comparison cost you nothing. What you pay later depends on the products you choose and how they are built. Agents are usually paid by the insurance company, and we tell you how we are paid on anything we recommend. Every cost is shown in writing before you sign.

Rider fees
Income riders and enhanced benefit riders usually carry a yearly charge. Over 20 years that adds up, so we weigh it against what the rider actually pays.
Surrender periods
Many annuities charge you to pull money out early, sometimes for many years. A longer surrender period can bring a better rate but less access if life changes.
Your age and health
Annuity payout rates generally rise with age. For life insurance, health affects what it costs to keep cash value and coverage in force.
How much is guaranteed
Fully guaranteed income usually starts lower than options tied to an index. More guarantees mean less upside, and more upside means more uncertainty.

Retirement income questions we hear

Is buying an annuity required to work with you?

No. The right move might be delaying Social Security, changing your withdrawals or keeping what you already own. We'd rather you buy nothing than the wrong product.

How is this different from a financial advisor?

It's not quite the same. Our focus is insurance-based income tools such as annuities and life insurance cash value. We don't manage stock portfolios. If you already have an advisor, we're happy to work alongside them so everything fits together.

If I die early, what happens to my annuity?

That depends on the contract. Some stop payments, some pass what's left to a beneficiary, and some guarantee payments for a fixed number of years. We tell you which type each option is before you decide.

Can a life insurance policy give me income in retirement?

Whole life and universal life policies can build cash value you can borrow or withdraw. That reduces your beneficiary's payout, and taking out too much can make the policy lapse. We run the figures so you know how far you can go without risking the coverage.

Do you help people who live outside Torrance?

Yes. We work with clients throughout the South Bay, including Redondo Beach, Gardena, Lomita and Palos Verdes Estates, and most planning can be done by phone.
